You open your vitamin C serum for the first time and it's a soft, pale yellow. A few weeks later it's noticeably darker. Orange, maybe even brown. Still safe? Still working? Here's exactly what's happened, and what to do about it.
The one-word answer: oxidation
The colour change is the vitamin C reacting with oxygen in the air, sped along by light and heat. Same basic chemistry as a sliced apple browning on the counter, just playing out more slowly inside a bottle.

Why traditional vitamin C is so fragile
L-ascorbic acid, the classic form, is notoriously unstable. Its molecular structure is highly reactive with oxygen. That reactivity is exactly what makes it a good antioxidant on your skin, and exactly what makes it fall apart in the bottle. Every time you open the cap, a little more air gets in, and the clock has been ticking since the day it was manufactured anyway.
Is oxidised serum safe to use?
Generally yes, in the sense that it's unlikely to harm you. But it's considerably less effective. Oxidised ascorbic acid has lost much of its antioxidant potency, so a serum that's turned properly orange or brown is a shadow of the product you paid for. Some oxidised formulas also become slightly more likely to niggle sensitive skin. Either way, you're not getting what you bought.
What speeds it up
- Light, especially direct sun. Clear glass bottles are a red flag for this reason.
- Heat. A shelf next to a hot shower, a car parked in summer.
- Air. Frequent opening, or packaging that lets air in generously.
- Formulation. Some brands add stabilising co-ingredients like vitamin E or ferulic acid to slow the decline. Some don't.
- Time. Even stored perfectly, opened L-ascorbic acid often has only a few good months in it.
Slowing it down
- Cap on tightly, opened as briefly as possible.
- Store in a drawer or cabinet, never a sunny windowsill.
- A bedroom shelf beats a steamy bathroom.
- Buy smaller sizes if you use it slowly, so the bottle runs out before the potency does.
- Watch the colour. Gradual darkening is normal ageing; a rapid change points to a storage problem.
The actual fix: a form that doesn't do this
Better storage discipline only slows the inevitable. The real solution is a form of vitamin C that resists oxidising in the first place. 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is structurally modified for exactly that, holding its potency, and its colour, far longer than L-ascorbic acid while still delivering genuine vitamin C benefits to the skin.
